Historic Landmarks

A charming place to experience a variety of marine activities such as fishing, camel or horse riding.

The historic port of Uqair is an ancient port located in the east of the Al-Ahsa Oasis. It was established around 960 AD. It was named Uqair or Al-Ajeer, as the people of Al-Ahsa call it, after the Ujjair tribe that inhabited the region during the first millennium BC. In the Dictionary of Countries by Yaqut al-Hamawi, it is mentioned that Uqar means every opportunity between two things, and its diminutive is Uqair. It was an important port during the era of the First Saudi State and continued its functions until its functions were transferred to the port of Dammam. Before the discovery of oil, it was the main port for the Eastern Province and southern and central Najd. Some of the ruins still exist today and it has become an archaeological landmark. The port of Uqair was the most important means of communication for the inhabitants of the region to the central authority, and therefore they paid great attention to it. King Abdulaziz entered Uqair to sign the Treaty of Uqair with Cox, in which Britain recognized Ibn Saud’s rule over Al-Ahsa in 1922 AD.
